Emergencies
STUDENT EMERGENCIES
The standard for handling medical or injury crises for students is to immediately notify the administrator. The administrator will contact a Campus Emergency Response Team (CERT) member and the parent/guardian for emergency treatment advice (i.e. hospital services). If unable to contact the parent/guardian and hospital treatment appears to be needed, the administrator will dial 911 and request an ambulance to be sent to the exit closest to the location of the student. A staff member will accompany the student to the hospital. Meanwhile, the administrator or counselor will continue to try and contact the parent/guardian by phone or visit the home or work site for notification of the student’s crisis. Students who appear to be or report to be ill should be referred to the school office. If it is a true emergency, call 911. While calling, push the button and ask for an administrator and SRO.
DRILLS
FIRE DRILL
North Carolina State Law requires fire drills to be held at least once each month. The signal is a continuous long ring. Teachers and students should exit the building according to plan. In the event that a child is alone in another part of the building, he/she should leave from the nearest exit. Fire drills will begin the first week of school. Staff will be notified of the first drill only. To notify staff of any other time would prevent the intent of the drill.
Fire Drill Procedures
The state law requires monthly fire drills and evacuation routes to be posted in every room.
a. The signal shall be the fire alarm.
b. Turn off lights.
c. Line up students and proceed quietly to your designated area.
d. Assign the last student out to close the door.
e. Maintain an orderly and silent single file line while waiting in your area.
f. Take roll when outside to determine the whereabouts of all students.
g. If the drill occurs while your class is outside, collect all students in a quiet line. Be prepared to exit from any part of the building regardless of activity.
h. Students who are working elsewhere with assistants or specialists should stay with those adults. Be sure to discuss with all your students what to do when they are in rest rooms or any place without the rest of the class when the alarm sounds.
i. An all clear signal will be given when it is safe to re-enter the building.
Note: Please refer to the evacuation plan for your individual teaching station. These plans must be posted at all times in your teaching stations, preferably near the light switch.
TORNADO DRILL
Tornado drills are conducted at least once a year during severe weather awareness week in April. The signal is a series of short rings. Students should kneel on the floor in the hallways in their designated area, face the wall, lower their heads to the floor, and hold their arms over their heads. Students should stay in this position until the “all clear” signal is given. In case of an actual tornado warning, the short-ring signal will sound. A warning means that a tornado has been sighted in the area. The procedures are as follows:
a. The signal shall be a siren sound over the intercom.
b. Line up children quietly.
c. Take children to the designated area within the building (inside walls).
d. Close all doors.
e. Children and adults should squat down facing the wall. The head should be bent down, the arms and hands placed over the head and neck for protection.
f. An all clear signal will be given when it is safe.
Note: Students in the trailer units should come into the main building and follow the procedures outlined above.
SECURITY
1. Please lock classroom doors and turn off lights when you leave your room IN THE DAY AND AT END OF THE DAY.
2. Do not lock classroom door if you are inside classroom with students.
3. All visitors should enter building through main office door, sign-in, and receive a badge.
BOMB THREAT PROCEDURES
a. The signal shall be the same as the fire drill with additional directions over the intercom to go as far from the buildings as possible.
b. Take the students out exits as designated for fire drills to areas far from buildings and buses.
c. Remain calm and move children out quickly. Do not gather personal possessions, just get out.
d. An all clear signal will be given when it is safe to re-enter the building.
LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES
If an emergency situation is occurring on or near a school campus, the school may be placed under “lockdown.” During a lockdown, all school doors and windows are locked and all students and staff remain in their classrooms or offices. No one is permitted to leave and no one, including parents, is allowed on campus.
We may be placed on a modified lockdown. Students and teachers may move within the building, but no one can leave the main building.
When school administrators confirm that the emergency is over, an “all clear” announcement is made and students and staff are able to resume normal activities.
SNOW EMERGENCY
Snow emergencies can vary so much that instructions will be reserved for last minute directions via the intercom. In such an emergency, all personnel must remain on the job until dismissed by the principal.
