School Safety and Security
The school is protected by a security system, which will detect a person in the building. Teachers may enter the building on weekdays from 6:30am-11:00pm. The principal will email out weekend hours in the bulletin each Friday. Teachers must wear their DPS badges at all times or they will be asked to leave the campus during off-hours. Administrators must clear admission into the building at any other time. If you would like the building disarmed for the weekend, then please contact the principal by Thursday of that week.
Strangers on campus who are not wearing a DPS badge or a RHS visitor’s pass, whether students or adults, need to be reported immediately to the office by calling the office receptionist.

Visitors, Guests, and Volunteers
All visitors should report to the office and sign in before going to a classroom. Staff members are responsible for redirecting any visitor or guest who does not have proper identification displayed to the front office to sign in and receive a visitor’s identification sticker.
We welcome everyone who is willing to volunteer. In order to be a Durham Public Schools volunteer, the Volunteer Application Form located online must be filled out. (This excludes parents working directly with their own child, as they must be escorted by a designated school official.)
Former students will not be permitted on campus during school hours.

School and Student Safety
Due to heightened security in all schools nationwide, new security measures have been put in place for the safety of our students. You are welcome to speak with a member of our Security Department if you have any questions about the new security procedures. They are happy to address any concerns you may have.
Releasing Students from School
1. Parents/Guardians are the only people allowed to take a student from school or request to visit with a student, unless prior arrangements have been made with the principal. (DPS Policy 4108)
2. All parents must show picture I.D. when picking up a student, when requesting to speak to their child during school hours, or when leaving items/messages for the student to retrieve from the main office.
Students Signing Themselves Out
1. No student under age 18 can sign him/herself out without parent/guardian contact being made. Students who are 18 years-old, who are documented to live on their own must have permission from an administrator before signing themselves out.
2. Students who have a valid Riverside HS parking pass and drive themselves to school can only be signed out if parent contact is made by front office staff via phone to confirm.
Sick Students
1. Students who are ill can report to the main office to call home with a signed pass from a teacher. Sick students must sit in the main office while waiting to be picked up.
2. If the parent is unavailable to pick up the student, the parent/guardian can give permission via phone to an administrator for a different person to pick the child up. Upon arrival, the approved person will need to present valid I.D., and an administrator will note the time/date of conversation with the parent/guardian who gave permission for the sick student to leave.

School Resource Officers (SROs) and Off Duty Officers
The Deputy Sheriffs assigned to RHS are under the direct supervision of the principal. The SRO is a safety officer, not a disciplinarian. Teachers may not send students to the SRO.
